“Compassion grows with the inner recognition that your neighbor shares your humanity with you. This partnership cuts through all walls which might have kept you separate. Across all barriers of land and language, wealth and poverty, knowledge and ignorance, we are one, created from the same dust, subject to the same laws, and destined for the same end. With this compassion you can say, “In the face of the oppressed I recognize my own face and in the hands of the oppressor I recognize my own hand. Their flesh is my flesh, their blood is my blood, their pain is my pain, their smile is my smile.”
          —Dr. John Perkins

VISION

To commit to serve East Lake, a community in Birmingham, for a minimum of 25 years

WHY EAST LAKE? WHY 25 YEARS?

After many months of prayer, we felt God’s call to focus on serving the East Lake area of our city. Many from the church grew up there & would like to see the shalom of God fall on that community. The leadership at Christ Church decided that generational change was vital to seeing sustainable effects & to breaking cycles of hardship in East Lake. They prayerfully determined that a minimum of 25 years is necessary for seeing sustainable, generational change.

WHAT ARE THE AREAS OF MINISTRY FOCUS?

There are 3 areas of focus: education, housing & community development. For more information go to:  http://www.eastlakeinitiative.com/

WHO CAN BE INVOLVED?

We do not believe this is just a call for Christ Church. Seeing God’s shalom fall over this segment of the city will only be accomplished through partnerships with individuals, ministries, churches, & programs in order to see generational change in this community. We believe God will accomplish much in & through His united body of believers.

WHAT ABOUT OTHER LOCAL MINISTRIES?

Although Christ Church has a focus in the East Lake community, it is certainly our desire to support local ministries outside of the focus area. We partner with several additional local ministries to serve our city and country.
