Redeeming Halloween: Living on Mission

By Sheri Hooven

What We Miss

It’s that time of year when whole neighborhoods empty out of their houses and flood our porches. Kids and teens sport bags and buckets in the hopes of filling them with our goodies. Oftentimes we are tempted to turn off our porch lights and hide, or we head to our churches to have our own parties, while the rest of the world is walking by our dark house. When we do this, we miss Gospel opportunities and the chance to be Jesus to our neighbors.

What We Can Do

So what if we thought about Halloween in a different way, as an opportunity to live missionally right on the street where we live? Instead of meeting at church or huddling inside someone’s house for small group this Wednesday, we’re encouraging groups to drag out that fire pit and grill, and engage your neighbors on the one night they come right to your doorstep! Groups can meet earlier than normal or gather for supper, then set up lawn chairs on the front lawn – maybe even with s’mores!

How to Engage

Unsure how to engage? Hospitality is key to opening the door to conversation. Make sure your house is the one they MUST stop at every year. Your house should be the most brightly lit, engaging house on the block- and ALWAYS have the best candy. If you offer regular-size bars when everyone else is giving away snack-size candy or “healthy snacks” (yuck!), you will be the talk of the neighborhood for sure! Put out coffee and cider for the adults or grill a few hotdogs to share, and before you know it, you’ll be engaging parents, grandparents, and even teenagers.

Don’t Miss this Opportunity!

Don’t miss the opportunity to have meaningful conversations with your neighbors. Get to know their stories by intentional questions that lead to deeper conversations. Ask the Holy Spirit’s help with walking through open doors to share Jesus’ love and make lasting relationships in the process. Redeem Halloween for the Kingdom this year!
